Waipu Cove, Fishing Charter

Over the ANZAC long weekend, we road tripped up to Waipu Cove (2 hours north of Auckland) to surprise one of our best friends with a fishing charter. This friend of ours has been telling us for months how keen he was to go out and catch some fish, so keeping it a secret for the last month or so was no easy feat.

We stayed in a great Airbnb that was two houses looking out right onto the estuary (Feel free to check out the listing here). We set up shop and got settled in, got a shorter sleep than we’re all used to, and made our way out to Marsden Cove Marina to meet up Steve from Bream Bay Charters.

We caught a good 13+ fish in the end (I think we ended up with 3x trevally 9x snapper and 1x blue mau mau). None of us had ever really filleted fish before either, so after a good couple hours of hacking away at the fillets, we finished the day off with some fresh ceviche salad, and got the local fish and chip shop to batter up the rest of the fillets for some classic kiwi fish & chips.

This weekend felt as Kiwi as it gets.
